Project Launch LimPROVE: In Search of the Right Questions

As we kick off our innovative case study named LimPROVE aimed at enhancing efficiency in the Fraunhofer IKTS lab, we are confronted with a crucial question:

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?

We are seeking a methodology that will enable us to systematically examine and evaluate lab processes, systems, and organisational structures. To this end, we will employ quantitative analyses to optimise resource utilisation and render efficiency measurable. The efficiency ratio of input to output will aid us in identifying and verifying potential improvements through 𝙇𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.

For the implementation of this ambitious project, we are utilising our SmartRack and the LIMS software SAMPLES from our partner qualitype. Both systems are highly adaptable to virtually any lab process thanks to their modularity and customisation options.

Focus Areas for Efficiency Enhancement
What should our main focus be:

• 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: How can we optimise the setup and breakdown times of experiments?
• 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗽𝘂𝘁: How can we process more samples in less time?
• 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: How do we ensure the highest quality of our products?
• 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: How do we optimise the allocation and utilisation of resources?

We are pleased to introduce one of our colleagues participating in the LimPROVE project, who will be tackling these specific questions: Ms. Susanne Koch, a food chemist currently pursuing a PhD on a microbiological topic within the industry. Her responsibilities at Better Basics Laborbedarf include conducting technical research on the SmartRack in the lab and designing sales strategies from a user perspective.
